Architecture

Photos that involves the photographing of structures/buildings and/or their interiors in such a way that it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and an accurate representation of the subject.

Abstract (New category for 2024)

Images should take a recognizable everyday object and, using creative composition and lighting, render the image in such a manner that the original subject matter becomes non-representational. Images should emphasize at least one of the following design elements: color, pattern, shape, line, texture, light and directional movement. Original subject matter should be indiscernible. Possible subject matter may include detail shots of nature, sections of architecture, man-made objects, reflections, patterns and shots taken through glass etc.

Beginner/Youth (15 & under)

Photos taken by someone who occasionally dabbles in photography or has only been taking photos for a short amount of time. Open to all subject matter. Beginner and Youth are welcomed to enter additional work in other categories also.

Birds/Waterfowl

Wild birds and waterfowl, swans, etc. No pet birds or farm fowl (These would go in domestic animals).

Domesticated Animals

Your family pets, animals that are tame and kept as pets or farm animals.

Flower(s)

The focus should be on the flower(s) The flower(s) are the star(s) of the photo. If you have hummingbirds, bees, butterflies in your shot then the photo will be entered in Nature.

Landscape

Subject or focus of the photographer for the viewers should be the beauty of entire scene. Photo may include, structures, water, but the focus is the entire grouping of possible subject(s) in the scene that make up the end result the landscape.

Macro/Extreme Close-up

The subject matter must fill 75% of the photograph. Any lens may be used and cropping is acceptable. (Again, does not need to be taken with macro lens)

Manipulation (All Categories)

This would be an altered reality type category, where you are allowed to add or subject anything, overlays, turn your photo into a painting, create a stained-glass effect, wild color combinations, etc.

Monochrome/Black & White

A photograph executed in shades and tints of any one color or black & white, Sepia (Brown & White), Cyanotype (Blue& White) etc.

Nature

Photos of plants, insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, weather, clouds, butterflies, mushrooms, celestial bodies are some examples of nature what you might want to enter in this category.

Panoramic 

Any subject matter shown in panoramic display. Panoramic scene can be done by stacking/stitching or panoramic lens etc. In this category you photo can be up to 24 inches long.

Portrait

Photo of a person or group of people that captures the personality/personalities of the subject(s) outside or in an indoor setting.
(Photos taken in or with professional help in a studio or workshop environmental may not be entered)

Still Life

Inanimate objects found naturally or objects arranged by photographer to achieve a pleasing image by utilizing composition, lighting and textures.

Street Photography

Candid photos of everyday life in public places (i.e. streets, parks, malls, sidewalk cafes, etc.). May be image that captures humanity in decisive moments in public spaces, too. (These photos should have at least one human/animal in the shot)

Transportation

Photo that shows any mechanical device or animal used to move a person or persons or cargo from one place to another or an isolated part of said device.

Undefined

This category is open to any subject matter, normally this is a category where the subject material can be a combination of many combined categories together. Ask yourself, when I photographed my subject what was the reason? (beautiful landscape, cute kitten, etc.) You will find the correct category among list. If not, this is the category for it.

Waterscapes

Subject or focus of photo should be a body of water. Examples include but are not limited to oceans, rivers, waterfalls, creeks, springs, ponds and lakes. This category could have structures but they would be complimentary and should not take the viewers focus away from the water, the beauty/serenity of the water in the photo is the subject.

Wildlife

Native or exotic animals (Mammals Only) found in their natural habitat. Zoo or preserve animals are acceptable because they are normally found in the wild. Those of us that haven’t been to the wilds of the Serengeti or the open range of the Dakotas must celebrate in presenting these wild captive animals in the best light. Cages, fences and/or bars that are visible will be negative factors within your photo so think about that when you are photographing the animals. “Wildlife is magnificent wherever you find it”.
